‘Stories are wild creatures, the monster said. When you let them loose, who knows what havoc they might wreak?’
Here at Drag Adventures, we like to give you a bit of diversity. There’s nothing we like more than visiting the theatre and we’ve even written a few theatre reviews for you. So when we were asked if we wanted to see the new production of the play A Monster Calls at Malvern Theatre in April, we jumped at the chance. Cut to us frantically getting a copy of the Patrick Ness book so we could read what the show was about because we like to be informed!
So what did we find out?
Well…..
The story follows 13 year old Connor and his mum. His mum is sick and he is pretty much invisible to everyone at school. This changes when he is visited by a monster (in the form of a tree) who tells him stories and forces him to tell his own. This leads to him facing up to his greatest fears.
But what is the relevance of 12:07 and why does the monster always visit at this time?
Well you’ll have to read the book to find out.
We’ve been doing our research and looked at some of the promotion shots from the play and it looks amazing! How they’ve managed to make the tree on stage looks incredible! We really can’t wait to see it live and see how it translates onto the stage thanks to the Olivier award winning director Sally Cookson.
The story offers a dazzling insight into love, life and healing and if the story is anything to go by, the show is going to be a visual and heartfelt rollercoaster which will leave us thinking and feeling. What more could you ask for from a show?
We’re looking forward to leaving a message for the Monster when we see the show next month. We haven’t got long to have a think about what to write though.
Look out next month for our review of the show and be sure to give Malvern Theatres and A Monster Calls play a follow on Instagram (details below). And if you’re going to the opening night performance of A Monster Calls at Malvern Theatre, come and say hi!
